Coming Back to Pokemon GO: What Changed and a First-Week Plan
Find the year you stopped playing, read only what is new for you, and spend your first week on the things that are time-gated instead of the things that are loud.
Start from the year you left
Most "what's new" lists assume you left last season. What matters is the gap between the game you remember and the one you just reopened, and that depends on when you stopped. Find your row and skip the rest.
| You left in | Probably new to you | Works differently now |
|---|---|---|
| 2017–18 | Team GO Rocket and Shadow Pokemon, GO Battle League, remote raids, Mega Evolution, XL Candy and Pokemon levels 41–50, plus every row below. Friends, gifts, trading, research tasks and Community Day arrived during 2018, so they may be new as well. | Raids run in 1-, 3- and 5-star tiers, with Mega, Shadow, Primal and Elite raids next to them. Gyms are no longer the centre of the game. |
| 2019–20 | GO Battle League and remote raids arrived in the first half of 2020, Mega Evolution and XL Candy in the second half, so you may have missed any of them. Shadow Raids, Primal Reversion, Routes, Party Play and Max Battles came later. | Since March 2026 any Shadow Pokemon can be shiny if the species already has a shiny released. Frustration still only comes off during Rocket Takeover events. |
| 2021–22 | Shadow Raids, Primal Reversion, Routes, Party Play, Max Battles (Dynamax and Gigantamax), trainer levels up to 80, Forever Friends. | Mega Evolution runs on Mega Levels and rest periods instead of paying full energy every time. |
| 2023–24 | Max Battles, if you left before they launched in late 2024. Trainer level 80, Forever Friends and remote trades, Super Mega Raids and Link Charges, the GO Battle League Mega Edition leagues. | Remote raids went from 5 to 10 per day. GO Battle League combat was rebuilt in June 2026 and the switch timer is 45 seconds. Storage now goes up to 12,650 Pokemon and 12,000 items. |
Whatever your row, the core loop has not changed: catch, raid, power up the right attackers. And several things you own have become more valuable while you were away, which is why the first rule of coming back is to transfer nothing yet.
What the level 80 rework did to your account
On 15 October 2025 the trainer level cap moved from 50 to 80 and the XP curve was redrawn. Your total XP was kept and re-applied to the new curve, so the level on your profile is probably higher than the one you remember. Nobody went down, and every trainer who was level 23 or above went up by at least one level. There is no conversion table: where you land depends on the XP you had banked, not on your old level number.
| Trainer level | Total XP needed |
|---|---|
| 30 | 1,083,000 |
| 40 | 3,953,000 |
| 50 | 12,753,000 |
| 60 | 34,353,000 |
| 70 | 85,853,000 |
| 80 | 203,353,000 |
What did not change
The rework touched trainer levels only. Your Pokemon still stop at level 50, or 51 while one is your Best Buddy. XL Candy is still earned from trainer level 31, and going past Pokemon level 40 still needs it: 296 XL Candy and 250,000 Stardust for the full 40 to 50 stretch. The level 40 to 50 guide explains when that is worth paying.
What came with it
- A Daily Adventure Egg from trainer level 15: a 1 km egg with its own incubator that does not take one of your egg slots and pays 10,000 XP when it hatches.
- Extra Pokemon and item storage handed out as level-up rewards, on top of what you can buy.
- Level-up research tasks now exist only for levels 71 to 80. The old level 41–50 task lists are gone, so there is no backlog waiting for you.
What your old Pokemon are worth now
The easiest way to damage an old account is a tidy-up on day one. Three kinds of Pokemon in your storage are worth more than their CP suggests.
Pokemon with moves that are no longer available
Every Community Day evolution carries an exclusive move, and other moves have left the regular pool over the years. A regular TM picks at random from the current pool and never gives a legacy move back, so one careless TM removes something that costs an Elite TM to restore. Type @special into the Pokemon search bar to list everything you own with an exclusive move, tag those Pokemon, and check them against their page in the Pokedex, where legacy moves are marked Elite. The Elite TM guide covers which of them deserve the investment.
Anything caught in 2020 or earlier
A trade has a small chance of turning both Pokemon Lucky, and that chance grows with the age of the Pokemon. Since the start of 2026, trading a Pokemon from 2020 or earlier is reported to produce a guaranteed Lucky trade until a trainer has received 45 of them — a community-documented rule rather than one Niantic spells out in the app, so treat the exact cap as approximate. Lucky Pokemon have IVs of at least 12/12/12 and cost half the Stardust to power up. Your 2016–2020 catches are the best trade bait you have. Search year2016,year2017,year2018,year2019,year2020 to see them, and read the trading guide before you hand any over.
Shadow Pokemon you never purified
Shadow Pokemon deal 20% more damage and take 20% more. In raids that trade is usually a good one, so an old Shadow you left alone is often more useful than its purified version. It still carries Frustration, which only comes off with a Charged TM during a Team GO Rocket Takeover event. Shadow, purified or normal walks through the decision.
The new systems in a few lines each
Max Battles (Dynamax and Gigantamax)
A separate battle system at Power Spots on the map, paid for with Max Particles instead of raid passes. You can collect 800 particles a day and hold 1,500, and they are only spent if you win. Up to four trainers fight together with three Pokemon each; Gigantamax battles take up to 40 trainers in groups of four. Only Pokemon caught with the ability can Dynamax, and everywhere else they behave like any other Pokemon. Joining remotely costs a Remote Raid Pass plus the particles.
Routes
Mapped walks that you start from a marked point and follow to the end. Finishing one can lead to a gift exchange with the character Mateo, which is a second source of 7 km eggs besides gifts from friends. Optional, and nothing you need to catch up on.
Party Play
Up to four trainers at level 15 or above who are physically together can form a party. In raids the party charges Party Power, which doubles the damage of your next Charged Attack, and it charges faster with more members.
GO Pass
A reward track with a free tier and a paid tier that you progress by playing. Collect the free tier as it comes and decide about the paid one after a month back, not on day one.
Mega Evolution, reworked
A Mega lasts 8 hours and raises the damage of the other trainers in a raid by 10%, or 30% for attacks sharing a type with it. Each individual Pokemon builds its own Mega Level as you evolve it: once for Base, 7 times for High, 30 for Max, with the next evolution free after a rest of 7, 5 or 3 days. February 2026 added a Super Max level above Max, Super Mega Raids — where Niantic recommends eight or more trainers who all bring a Mega, because only a Mega's Charged Attacks break the boss's shields — and Link Charges, a new resource used to enter Mega Raids in person. Since September 2026 Megas are also legal in separate "Mega Edition" GO Battle League leagues, and nowhere else in PvP.
Friendship beyond Best Friends
Friendship still takes 1, 7, 30 and 90 days of interaction to reach Good, Great, Ultra and Best. Ninety more points make you Forever Friends, which unlocks a remote trade with that friend. You get one remote trade per day in total, it does not count as a Special Trade, and it excludes Pokemon caught in the last 30 days as well as Shadow, Mythical, Mega and fused Pokemon.
A first-week plan
The order is deliberate: first the things that run on a calendar and cannot be bought, then sorting what you own, and only then spending.
- Day 1 — start the clocks. Add friends, then send and open gifts; friendship counts days, so every day you wait is a day later that raid damage bonuses and cheap trades arrive. Put the Daily Adventure Egg in its incubator. Redeem whatever is live on the promo codes page while your item bag is empty. Transfer nothing.
- Day 2 — sort before you touch. Tag your
@specialPokemon, your 2016–2020 catches, your Shadows, and your shinies, legendaries and mythicals. The search strings page has the filters ready to copy, and the storage routine shows what is safe to transfer once the tags are on. - Day 3 — use the free raid pass. You get one a day from spinning a gym. Pick a 1-star or 3-star boss from the current raid list, which you can beat alone, and look at its counters to see which types your storage is missing. How many trainers a raid needs tells you what is realistic for the bigger ones.
- Day 4 — fight Team GO Rocket. Grunts at PokeStops pay 500 Stardust each and hand you a Shadow Pokemon encounter. Keep the Shadows of strong species; do not purify anything yet.
- Day 5 — choose six Pokemon to build. Open best attackers by type, compare it with what you already own, and pick one good attacker for each of the types raids keep asking for. Then read where to spend Stardust before powering up: six Pokemon at level 30 beat one at level 50.
- Day 6 — try a 1-star Max Battle. Collect particles from Power Spots as you walk, enter an easy battle and catch your first Dynamax Pokemon. A loss costs you no particles, so there is nothing to lose by learning here.
- Day 7 — check the calendar and play one GO Battle League set. The events page shows the next Community Day, which runs from 14:00 to 17:00 local time; recent ones have let you evolve for the exclusive move until 21:00, but confirm that on the event's own page. Every win in a set of five pays Stardust or items, and you need no particular team to collect a few. You get five sets a day, ten on GO Battle Thursdays.
What to ignore for now
The game shows you every system in the first ten minutes. Most can wait a month without costing you anything.
- Level 40 to 50 power-ups. 250,000 Stardust and 296 XL Candy for roughly 6% more stats on one Pokemon. Build teams first.
- Super Mega Raids and Gigantamax battles. Both are designed for large, prepared groups. Join one when a local community is running it; do not plan your week around them.
- Trainer level 80. Levels arrive on their own. Nothing above depends on your level once you are past 31 and earning XL Candy.
- Perfect IVs. For raids, level and moves matter far more than the last few IV points, and for Great and Ultra League a 100% is usually not the best spread anyway. The IV checker and PvP IVs explained are there when you get to it.
- Master League and the Mega Edition leagues. Both assume maxed Pokemon. Great League, with its 1,500 CP cap, is where a returning account can compete immediately; the Great League rankings show what to look for in your storage.
- Buying things. The one purchase that ages well is storage — 50 slots for 200 coins — and even that is better decided after your first clean-up.
A month in you will have friendships at Ultra, a sorted storage, six attackers that pull their weight and a clear idea of which part of the game you enjoy.
FAQ
Did I lose levels in the level 80 rework?
No. In October 2025 every account had its total XP re-applied to a new curve that runs to level 80. Nobody went down, and every trainer who was level 23 or higher went up by at least one level. There is no fixed old-level-to-new-level table, because the result depends on how much XP you had banked.
Can my Pokemon go above level 50 now that trainers reach level 80?
No. The rework only changed trainer levels. Pokemon still stop at level 50, or 51 while they are your Best Buddy. XL Candy is still earned from trainer level 31, and powering up past level 40 still costs XL Candy: 296 of it, plus 250,000 Stardust, to go from 40 to 50.
Are my Pokemon from 2016 worth anything?
Often, yes. Any Pokemon carrying a move it can no longer learn from a regular TM keeps that move until you overwrite it, and old catches are the ones that can become guaranteed Lucky Pokemon when traded. Lucky Pokemon have IVs of at least 12/12/12 and cost half the Stardust to power up. Do not transfer or TM anything old until you have sorted it.
How many remote raids can I do per day?
Ten per day since May 2025, with higher limits during some events. You can hold at most three Remote Raid Passes at a time, and the help centre still states that Pokemon of remote trainers deal reduced damage. Shadow Raids and Max Battles can also be joined remotely.
What should a returning player do first?
Start the clocks that cannot be bought: add friends and open gifts (friendship levels take 1, 7, 30 and 90 days), hatch the Daily Adventure Egg, and use the free daily raid pass. Sorting your old storage comes next. Spending Stardust comes last, once you know which six Pokemon deserve it.
