How eggs work

Where each egg comes from, and how the hatch is decided

Where each egg distance comes from
  • 2 km & 5 km — dropped by PokeStops and gyms. The most common eggs, with the widest pools.
  • 7 km — only from opening Gifts sent by friends. Alolan, Galarian and event Pokemon.
  • 10 km — rarer PokeStop drops. Pseudo-legendaries and strong PvP picks.
  • 12 km Strange Eggs — beat a Team GO Rocket Leader. Dark and Poison types, and they need a free bonus storage slot.
  • Adventure Sync — walk 25 km or 50 km in a week. Exclusive 5 km and 10 km pools, handed out Monday morning.
When is the Pokemon inside decided?

The moment you receive the egg — from a PokeStop, a Gift, a Rocket Leader battle or an Adventure Sync reward. The pool that was live at that moment is the one that applies, not the pool on the day it hatches. Eggs collected during an event keep their event Pokemon even if you hatch them weeks later.

Level, IVs and rewards from a hatch

Hatched Pokemon are level 20 (level 25 during events with an egg bonus) and are guaranteed a minimum of 10/10/10 IVs, so every hatch is at least 67% perfect. That makes eggs one of the most reliable sources of high-IV Pokemon in the game.

Stardust and candy scale with distance: roughly 400–800 Stardust from 2 km, 800–1,600 from 5 km, 1,600–3,200 from 10 km and 3,200–6,400 from 12 km. Popping a Star Piece before hatching a batch of 10 km eggs is one of the most efficient Stardust plays available.

Distance tracking, storage and incubators

Distance is measured by GPS and by your phone's step counter through Adventure Sync, in straight-line segments about once a minute. Anything faster than roughly 10.5 km/h does not count, so driving is out.

You can hold 9 eggs plus 3 in bonus storage. Bonus slots are reserved for 12 km Strange Eggs and special event eggs. Eggs cannot be discarded — the only way to free a slot is to hatch it, and a full egg storage stops you receiving new eggs entirely.

Use the unlimited incubator on 2 km eggs and save Super Incubators for 10 km and 12 km eggs, and keep a slot free on Sunday night so the Monday Adventure Sync reward has somewhere to land.

FAQ

What hatches from 10km eggs in Pokemon GO?
10km eggs contain rare Pokemon including pseudo-legendaries and strong PvP/PvE Pokemon. The exact pool rotates with each season. Check the 10km section above for the current hatch list with shiny availability.
Can you get shiny Pokemon from eggs in Pokemon GO?
Yes! 92 Pokemon currently available in eggs can be shiny. The shiny rate from eggs is the standard 1/512 (approximately 0.2%). Shiny-eligible Pokemon are marked with a sparkle icon in our chart above.
What are Adventure Sync eggs in Pokemon GO?
Adventure Sync eggs are special 5km and 10km eggs earned as rewards for walking 25km or 50km in a week. They have an exclusive hatch pool different from regular eggs. You need an open egg slot on Monday 9:00 AM local time when rewards are distributed.
How do 12km Strange Eggs work in Pokemon GO?
12km Strange Eggs (red eggs) are obtained by defeating Team GO Rocket Leaders (Sierra, Cliff, Arlo). They hatch Dark-type and Poison-type Pokemon. You need both an open egg slot and open bonus storage slot before battling a Leader.
What is the rarest egg hatch in Pokemon GO?
The rarest hatches are typically from 10km and 12km eggs. Rarity is indicated by the number of egg icons shown in the game (1 egg = common, 5 eggs = ultra rare). Our chart shows rarity tiers for each Pokemon.
How do 7km eggs work in Pokemon GO?
7km eggs are obtained by opening gifts from friends. They contain Alolan forms, Galarian forms, baby Pokemon, and event-exclusive Pokemon. The pool changes frequently with events.
How do I get better Pokemon from eggs?
Egg Pokemon are determined the moment you receive the egg, not when it hatches. For the best hatches: use the infinite incubator on 2km eggs, save Super Incubators for 10km and 12km eggs, and always keep an egg slot open before claiming Adventure Sync rewards on Monday morning.
What is the egg hatch rate for each rarity tier?
Niantic does not publish official hatch rates, but community research suggests: 1-egg tier (common) roughly 30-40% chance, 2-egg tier roughly 20-25%, 3-egg tier roughly 10-15%, and 5-egg tier (ultra rare) roughly 1-5%. These rates vary by distance and season.
Do eggs count toward buddy candy distance?
Yes! Walking distance counts toward both egg hatching and buddy candy simultaneously. You can maximize efficiency by always having eggs incubating while walking your buddy Pokemon. Use Adventure Sync to track distance even when the app is closed.
Can I get regional Pokemon from eggs?
Yes, 7km Gift eggs occasionally contain regional Pokemon during special events. Some regionals like Mime Jr. (Europe) have been available in 5km eggs in their home region. Check the current 7km pool above to see if any regionals are available right now.
What CP will my hatched Pokemon have?
Pokemon hatched from eggs are always level 20 (or level 25 during certain events). The CP depends on the Pokemon's base stats and the random IVs assigned when you received the egg. Egg Pokemon are guaranteed minimum 10/10/10 IVs, making them a good source for high-IV specimens. Check each Pokemon's Pokedex page for CP ranges.
When does the Pokemon GO egg pool change?
The egg pool typically changes at the start of each new season (every 3 months) and during major events. Niantic announces egg pool updates in their official blog and in-game news. We update this chart daily to reflect the current September 2026 egg pool.
