Elite TMs: Who Deserves One and When to Wait

You get a handful of Elite TMs a year and dozens of Pokemon want one. Spend them on moves that change what a Pokemon is, and never on a move an evolve window will hand you free.

What a TM actually does

A regular Fast TM or Charged TM replaces the move with a random different move from the species' current pool. You do not choose, and legacy moves are never in the pool. With two charged moves in the pool the result is certain: you get the other one. With five, each TM has a 1 in 4 chance of landing on the move you want, and the next TM can take it away again.

An Elite TM shows you the whole list and lets you pick, and the list includes legacy moves and Community Day exclusive moves. That is its entire value: it is the only item that reaches a move outside the regular pool, and it does so on a Pokemon you already own, at the level and IVs it already has.

There are two kinds, the Elite Fast TM and the Elite Charged TM, and neither can stand in for the other. To see what an Elite TM would unlock on a given species, open its page in the Pokedex: in the move tables, every move that a regular TM cannot roll carries an Elite badge.

How many you will realistically get

Niantic has never promised a fixed supply, so read this as what has typically happened:

  • GO Battle League rank 19: an Elite Charged TM when you reach it.
  • End of season at rank 19 or higher: an Elite Fast TM.
  • GO Battle League timed research (2026): one of each across its pages.
  • The shop: a Community Day box, one per Community Day, and the occasional paid research ticket.

Seasons last about three months. Forever Forward ran from 2 June to 8 September 2026 and Twilight Trails runs from 8 September to 1 December. A player who reaches rank 19 every season therefore collects roughly four Elite Charged and four Elite Fast TMs a year from rank rewards, plus whatever research adds. Rank 19 is one of the twenty numbered ranks that come before the rating-based ones (Ace starts at a rating of 2,000). The league allows five sets of five battles a day, ten sets on GO Battle Thursdays, and the Great League tier list is the place to start if you have never played it.

Now look at demand. Gengar alone has five legacy moves and Machamp four. Every Community Day species has its exclusive move, and many raid legendaries keep a signature move behind the same wall. Dozens of Pokemon in your storage could use an Elite TM and you will receive a handful of each kind a year. Stardust, Candy and even Rare Candy XL can be farmed harder when you need more. Elite TMs cannot, which makes them the scarcest item you hold.

The rule: do not spend it until you need the move

An unspent Elite TM keeps all of its options. A spent one is worth exactly the move you chose, on exactly that Pokemon, for as long as that move stays good. So the default is to wait, and the question before every use is whether the move will come to you some other way.

Moves that come back

Community Day exclusive moves return. The species gets a Community Day Classic, which runs in the same format, and evolving during the window (14:00 to 21:00 local time on the day) gives the move for nothing. Garchomp's Earth Power comes from Gible Community Day, and Gible had a Community Day Classic on 12 September 2026. A Classic is announced weeks ahead with its featured move named in the post, so an Elite Charged TM spent on a Community Day move without first checking the event calendar can be buying something that is about to be free.

The way to profit from this is to keep one good unevolved specimen of every species with a Community Day move: a Beldum for Meteor Mash, a Rhyhorn for Rock Wrecker, a Mudkip for Hydro Cannon, a Larvitar for Smack Down. When the window opens you evolve it and the Elite TM stays in the bag. The storage clean-up routine shows how to keep those without drowning in duplicates.

Moves that rarely come back

Legendary signature moves are the opposite case. Psystrike on Mewtwo, Origin Pulse on Kyogre, Precipice Blades on Groudon, Sacred Sword on Terrakion: a legendary has nothing to evolve from, so there is no evolve window, and the move has only tended to reappear when a raid event is announced with it. If your good one was caught without the move, an Elite Charged TM is the realistic route.

When "need" is real

Need means you will use the Pokemon with that move this month: a boss on the raid list is weak to its type, or it is a core piece of the GO Battle League team you are actually playing. "It would be nice to have" is not need. The Elite TM will still be there next season; the choice, once made, will not.

Thirty seconds that save an Elite TMBefore every Elite TM, open the events page and look for a Community Day, a Community Day Classic or a raid event featuring the move in the coming weeks.

What an Elite TM cannot do

  • It cannot remove Frustration from a Shadow Pokemon outside a Team GO Rocket Takeover event. During a Takeover a regular Charged TM removes it, so the Elite TM is never the tool for that job. In 2026 the windows so far were 23–25 January, 30 April–4 May and 25–29 June.
  • It cannot teach Frustration or Return. Once either is replaced it is gone for good.
  • It cannot be used on Smeargle.
  • It cannot replace Secret Sword, Behemoth Blade, Behemoth Bash or Dynamax Cannon.
  • It does not teach Dragon Ascent. Rayquaza learns that from a Meteorite, and needs it to Mega Evolve.
  • It does not fix the Pokemon. Low IVs, the wrong form and a level you will never raise are all still there after the move changes.

The Shadow case deserves a second look because it catches people every Community Day. A Shadow that still knows Frustration does not learn the exclusive move when evolved, and an Elite Charged TM will not overwrite Frustration afterwards either. The order has to be: wait for a Takeover, clear Frustration with a regular Charged TM, and only then evolve in a window or use the Elite TM. Shadow, purified or regular walks through the planning.

Elite Fast or Elite Charged

Most of the well-known legacy moves are charged moves: Meteor Mash, Rock Wrecker, Hydro Cannon, Earth Power, Psystrike. Legacy fast moves are fewer but some matter just as much: Smack Down on Tyranitar, Force Palm on Lucario, Lick on Gengar, Karate Chop on Machamp.

The useful way to sort them is not fast against charged but role-changing against percent-improving.

  • Role-changing: without the move the Pokemon does a different job or none. Tyranitar is a Dark attacker with Bite and a Rock attacker only with Smack Down. Metagross without Meteor Mash is not the Steel attacker people mean when they say Metagross. These are worth an Elite TM.
  • Percent-improving: the Pokemon already does the job with regular moves and the legacy move is a little better. Gengar's Shadow Claw with Shadow Ball is the standard Ghost set and needs nothing special; Lick is a small upgrade. Machamp has four legacy moves and its raid set, Counter with Dynamic Punch, uses none of them. These are not worth one.

To tell which is which for any species, compare the rows in the move table on its Pokedex page: the PvE tab gives DPS and energy per second for fast moves, and the PvP tab the per-turn numbers. If the Elite-badged move is a few percent ahead of the best regular one, keep the TM. If it is the only move of its type on the list, that is a role.

Before you tap Use

Six questions. A single "no" means wait.

  1. Is this the copy you will keep? Read its IVs with the IV checker. For raids you want high Attack; for Great and Ultra League usually the opposite, as PvP IVs explained shows. An Elite TM on a Pokemon you later replace is an Elite TM thrown away.
  2. Is it the right species and form, fully evolved? A legacy move belongs to one species' move list. Meteor Mash is on Metagross's list, not Beldum's, so the TM goes on the final form. If you own both a Shadow and a regular, decide which one you are going to power up before anything else: the TM costs the same on either, the Stardust does not.
  3. Is Frustration already gone? If not, stop here until the next Takeover.
  4. Is the move absent from the calendar? Check events for a Community Day, a Classic or a raid event that features it.
  5. Will you use it this month? Look at the current raid rotation and at best attackers by type for the type you are short of.
  6. Is there no free alternative? For some jobs a Pokemon with regular moves does nearly as well. If the Fighting list offers you a Machamp that needs no Elite TM, the legendary that needs one can wait.

Who deserves one

Rankings move with every rebalance, so this is an order of kinds of candidate, not a list of names. The names are examples of each kind.

1. A legendary you have already built, missing its signature move

No evolve window will ever help, the Pokemon is already high level with IVs you like, and the move defines its role. Mewtwo without Psystrike, Kyogre without Origin Pulse, Groudon without Precipice Blades. This is the cleanest use there is.

2. A move that matters in raids and in GO Battle League at once

One TM, two game modes. Hydro Cannon on Swampert is the textbook case. Even here, check first whether you hold a spare Mudkip and whether a window is coming.

3. A Shadow you evolved before its Frustration could be cleared

The evolve window is no longer an option for that Pokemon, and its 20% damage bonus makes the investment go further than on a regular copy. Clear Frustration at a Takeover, then use the Elite TM.

4. Everything else waits

Percent-improving moves, anything you could evolve a spare for at the next Classic, anything under level 30 that you have no Stardust to raise, and anything you want only because a list said so. Where to spend Stardust helps with the second-to-last of those, and the movesets shown on best attackers by type tell you which legacy moves the rankings actually rest on. Cross-check the Elite badge on the Pokemon's own page before you commit.

FAQ

Can a regular TM give a legacy move?

No. A Fast TM or Charged TM replaces the current move with a random different move from the species' regular pool. Legacy and Community Day moves are never in that pool, however many TMs you use.

How do you get Elite TMs in Pokemon GO?

Typically from GO Battle League: an Elite Charged TM on reaching rank 19 and an Elite Fast TM at the end of a season finished at rank 19 or higher. In 2026 the league's timed research has added one of each, and Community Day boxes in the shop and occasional paid research include them. None of these is guaranteed to continue unchanged.

Can an Elite TM remove Frustration from a Shadow Pokemon?

Not outside a Team GO Rocket Takeover event, and during one a regular Charged TM does the job, so an Elite TM should never be spent on it. An Elite TM also cannot teach Frustration or Return.

Is a Community Day move the same as the Elite TM version?

Yes, it is the same move. Evolving the featured Pokemon between 14:00 and 21:00 local time on Community Day gives it for free, which is why spending an Elite TM shortly before that species has a Community Day or Community Day Classic is the classic way to waste one.

Which Pokemon or moves does an Elite TM not work on?

It cannot be used on Smeargle, and it cannot replace Secret Sword, Behemoth Blade, Behemoth Bash or Dynamax Cannon. Rayquaza's Dragon Ascent is taught with a Meteorite rather than any TM.
